I don’t know about you, but in the course of an entire day, I have a lot of thoughts.

I think about the things I want to accomplish, the dreams I have, if the decisions I’m making in each moment are going to get me where I want to go or reflecting who I want to be known as. I think A LOT & I process every tiny detail. Then I’ll either finish my processing by speaking it out loud, or by writing it, whether here on this blog, or in my personal journal. I am a thinker. I am a dreamer. But I’m not the only one.

I know that we all are. Thinkers, that is. Whether you’re a visionary like me, or a more practical type A, get-all-my-ducks-in-a-row type of person, you’re a thinker too. We all have a thousand thoughts running through our heads at any given moment. We all have things we dwell on; we think, we dream, & then we act based on that.

As a dreamer, I’ve probably dreamed of over fifty careers for myself. I’ve dreamt of my life going at least thirty different directions. I’ve wanted to be an ER nurse, a singer, a school teacher, a choir director, a marine biologist, a veterinarian, a broadway actress, a hairdresser, a fashion designer, a chef, a blogger, a youth pastor, a worship leader, a bestselling author, & the list goes on. Some of these things still remain on my list of dreams. But I can tell you, in all my dreaming, not ONCE has my life ever gone in the direction that I dreamed it would. Yes, I’ve achieved some of my goals, but when I finally got there I realized that it hadn’t happened the way I had planned it to. The goal itself didn’t look like I thought it would in the end, & I usually ended up dreaming bigger or changing my mind about the goal altogether!

In Isaiah 55:8-9, God says to us,

for my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
for as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
& my thoughts than your thoughts.

In our lifetime, we will have all kinds of thoughts & dreams for ourselves. You probably currently have all sorts of paths you’ve laid out for your future. You know exactly what you will do each moment to get to where you want to be, & maybe even where you feel God has called you to be. But let me remind you that your thoughts & dreams for your own life cannot even come anywhere close to what God has dreamt up for your life. We will never see ourselves or our purpose in life as highly as God does. His ways are higher & His thoughts are wilder.

We cannot plan out our lives based on our tiny dreams. We set goals based on our small view of the world, limited by the way we grew up, the things we’ve experienced, & the knowledge we’ve inherited & learned. But God doesn’t view the world or our lives through the tiny box that is our background or our culture. God see the world for what He created it to be. He see our lives for who He created it to be, & for who He created us to be, personally. We must set aside our own feeble abilities to reach our dreams & instead embrace His enormous & exuberant power! We must believe God’s ability to use us in this world. We must fix our eyes on Him so that we aren’t settling for any of our own, weak, small plans for our life. His plan for us is so much greater than anything that we could ever think up.

The depth of God’s love for us & the Truth of who God says we are runs deep in our veins. He planted every dream & every desire in our heart on the day He began knitting us together in our mother’s womb. He knows where we want to go & who we want to be. He knows where we’ve been, where we are now, & how to get us where we should be. The path to getting there most likely won’t look how we’ve imagined it. But we have to remember that our dream for ourselves isn’t nearly as extravagant or vibrant than His dream for us is. Our minds can never comprehend or understand God’s amazingly, wild thoughts for us, & we will never begin to exhaust His extravagant love.

  1. Have been wanting to comment- but I came across your post again today and realized I hadn’t yet! I relate to this so much.just questioning what exactly is my purpose here on earth, from moments where I think I know exactly what I want to do- to thinking, “what am I doing here anyway?” I would put my wants before His needs for me in my life. But more recently, I feel God has put some big dreams on my heart and now all I have to do is put all my faith in Him and go. Chase them. For He will use us for the dreams He puts in our hearts. And fulfill the purpose He has for us on this earth in our lives. Love this.

    1. Thank you so much Jess, for your sweet comment! Yes, the Lord has a great purpose for all of us and He WILL fulfill that!!! One thing I have learned over the years though is to let Him have the reigns. We need to let God go after our dreams and just follow Him as He does that. I’ve taken steps forward before where God intended for me to wait.. so just make sure in your pursuit of your goals and passions and desires that you don’t get ahead of God. Sometimes you’ll need to wait. And it will hurt. And it will be hard. But God has impeccable timing, and we can’t forget that! Thanks for reading Jess. I’m going to keep reading your posts too! ❤

      1. So sorry I took so long for the reply! Thank you so so much! Amen. That means so much, thank you.
